3 Things I Learned When I Moved To a New City

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

As most of you don't know (sine I haven't blogged in a year and a half) I moved to Cincinnati this past May.  Yes, I packed up all of my things and moved to a place I had only ever visited once before to start my full-time career after graduate school.  I've moved around before, for a job and for school, but never like this.  This was the first time that I truly started over, knowing no one, not having any real connection to a friend group, and planning to stay there for a considerable amount of time.

So - now that I've been settled in my new city for nearly 8 months - I think it's time to share the 3 things I learned moving to a new city... alone.

1.  Everyone is going to be concerned with how you're "adjusting"
This took some adjusting getting used to.  I know that every "how are you liking Cincinnati?" "how are you adjusting here?" and "are you making friends?" question that I got from my new coworkers, old coworkers, friends from home, family members, and random Instagram friend I haven't seen in person in 7 years meant well... or at least I like to think that.  However, this was one of the most overwhelming parts of finding myself in a completely new city with no social network.  The truth is, I was adjusting great.  I had moved around so much in the past 3 years that another transition felt comfortable...but by the 10th time I got asked this question, I was starting to wonder if I shouldn't be okay, or comfortable.  Which I know now is completely silly - but gosh, this wore me down.

2. Making friends takes a lot of effort
Gone are the days of kindergarten when you could just walk up to a stranger and decide that you're friends now.  Granted, those were also the days when people ate glue... so I'm pretty thankful those days are gone... but you get my point.  In my last transition making friends was so ridiculously easy because I was thrown into a cohort of other graduate students and coworkers that lived within minutes of each other - but this time - I had to navigate that process all. on. my. own.  I'll admit, especially as an ambivert, I don't often make plans or reach out to others outside of the work day - I'm pretty damn independent.  However, that means that you don't make a lot of meaningful connections...aka friends.  I've made a few, but more like work friends, not a lot of hangout-after-work-and-on-the-weekends-friends.  I'm working on it. But it's so...so...hard.

3. You will find the things that make it feel like home
Despite everyone asking you if you're adjusting and realizing you were better at making friends 20 years ago than you are after 2 college degrees later...you will find those things about your new home that make it feel like it really is yours.  This did not take long for me.  I quickly discovered that the quaint little farmers market is a short walk from my apartment, and made visiting that a part of my weekly routine.  I sought out the best restaurants (within my budget), the free festivals, and the quiet parks where I could sit down and read a good book.  Making time for these things made me start to feel a deep connection to Cincinnati and my new neighborhood.

Are any of you planning on moving to a new place?  What are you most worried about?

If you've moved somewhere new too - what did you learn?  I'd love to know - I'll be replying to your comments.

Moving to Texas & A Trip To The Farmers Market | Life Lately

Texas

Hello loves,

How are you? How's it going? How've you been?

I've been great, thanks for asking.

So I did a thing... and I moved to Texas for the summer. Are we really surprised that I did something drastic that involved traveling and work (I'm here for a job, fyi)? No. No, we are not.

So yeah. I moved to a city just south of Oklahoma for the next few months - and am super excited for a great and adventurous summer.
Farmers Market Texas

Since this was my first weekend in a new place, I felt the need to go exploring.  One of my roommates (I have 2) and I ventured out to the farmers market, and found some great things and talked to some great people!

Produce Farmers Market

We found a ton of great produce at the market. I grabbed some blackberries, strawberries, and herbs to make some infused water (and maybe some cocktails).

Fruit and Vegetables Texas

The worst thing about the market was that we could only buy so much that we would be able to eat before it goes bad! Lucky for us, the market happens every week!

Not only was there a great selection of produce, but there was also meat, cheese, and even wine!

We also met this great woman who was selling homemade soap, and even solid shampoo like they sell at LUSH! Her products smelled super good. Here is a link to her etsy shop!

Organic Handmade Soap

I hope you enjoyed this little update on my Life Lately.  Let me know in the comments what you're up to this summer or what your favorite items are to buy at the Farmers Market.

My Aha Moment | Life Lately

Hello loves,

I just wanted to throw together a quick Life Lately post to share with you a cool thing I did!  A few days ago I was invited to head up to Madison, WI because I was invited to film my very own Aha Moment with Mutual of Omaha.

Now, I'm not going to reveal what my Aha Moment was or what I truly went up there to talk about that - beacuse... spoilers. But it was a gorgeous day, I talked to some really nice people... and I encourage you to check out the other Aha Moments over at their website!

I'll keep all of you posted on when my video goes live!

A Little Bit Of Love | Life Lately and Bonus DIY

Hello loves,

I've talked a few times about being Maid of Honor for my friend who is getting married this summer. A few weeks back I hosted her bridal shower - along with her mom and other bridesmaids - and I thought I'd share a few pictures from the day! (At the end see a little mini DIY for Bridal Party Survival Kits).

Me and the beautiful bride!

Of course I had to do a Mimosa Bar!

How delicious does our dessert table look?

I put together these adorable little mason jar "Wedding Emergency Kits" to give to each of the bridesmaids (and the bride of course) for the big day!

I purchased 6 blue mason jars from Target and filled them with lotion, oil blotting sheets, band aids, bobby pins, ibuprofen, chapstick, and some chocolate! They turned out so cute and hopefully will come in handy for the wedding.

What are your bridal shower or wedding survival tips? Let me know in the comments!

Sunny Southern California | Life Lately

Hello loves,

For the majority of April I have been galavanting around Southern California. Okay, galavanting might be the wrong word. I've been working for the most part, but have had the unbelievable opportunity to experience the area around me and spend time really soaking in the SoCal atmosphere!

If you follow me on Twitter, Insta, or Facebook you have probably seen a glimpses of my time here in sunny southern California - but I wanted to share some of my favorite moments here on BFJ for all to enjoy.

I've been to San Bernardino, Anaheim, Disneyland, Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Santa Monica.  Let me tell you - April in SoCal sure beats April in Wisconsin!

Without further ado, here is what life has looked like for me lately.

Easter at Home | Life Lately

Hello loves,

Today I'm coming to you with a post from my mom's blog - Bluebird 1959.  Since I am currently traveling and not able to be with family I wanted to share with all of you what Easter looked like back home this year.   Not only did my mom's side of the family gather together yesterday to celebrate Easter, but also to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday!

Luckily, I am spending the day with a wonderful advisor from the sorority I work for who has invited me into her home and is having her family over for a big dinner tonight.  I'm not going to lie and say it isn't a little awkward to spend Easter with someone I met just last night - but it is a reminder of how lucky I am to be part of such a welcoming and loving group of women.

So wherever you are and whatever you believe, I hope you are spending today with people you love - or doing something you love.

Let me know what you are up to today in the comments!

Be sure to visit Bluebird 1959!

I want to wish  you all a very happy and blessed Easter.

Not much for words today, but I will share with you some Easter "candy!"

My lovely, sweet mom turns 90 tomorrow and yesterday our family got together to celebrate with her.  "Kids," grandkids and great grandkids spent the afternoon together  to mark the day.

Hoping your day is filled with joy, happiness and love.

Thanks for stopping by,
Jane
